Episode 72 – Slaying orcs and finding paths

by on February 3, 2017

This week we talk mostly about pen and paper RPGs and the fun we’ve been having playing Pathfinder – a D&D relation. We also talk about a fantastic podcast called The Glass Cannon Podcast which has taught us a huge amount about role playing and the rules of Pathfinder. And then finally we respond to a listener comment talking about how kids can be allowed to message each other using phones and tablets using an unexpectedly classic app! Check the 30 minute mark if you want to skip past all the Pathfinder nerdery.

Glad the suggestion about email was helpful!

Really enjoyed all the stuff about roleplaying games. I’m an old school gamer and used to play AD&D, Traveller, Runequest and Call of Cthulhu back in the day, and even co-edited a fanzine for a while. The main problem I find nowadays is finding time to play and getting people together.

We ran through the introductory scenario that came with the D&D fifth edition rules a while ago, and had great fun doing it. I think that they scrapped a lot of the miniatures based rules of 4e and it’s gone back to a much simpler structure. Players shouldn’t need to know the rules, and a good GM should always be prepared to be flexible to keep the story flowing.

A couple of recommendations – there are iOS versions of the Fighting Fantasy and Sorcery gamebooks that work really well. They take care of the dice rolling and record keeping, and should be perfect for your kids (or you!). Secondly, we went to a seminar on digital fiction last week and got to play with a free tool called Twine (https://twinery.org/) that makes it really easy to create and share your own interactive choose your own adventure style stories. It’s a little bit like editing a wiki, but there is sort of flowchart view so you can see the paths through the story.
